Video: Green Planet Episode 9 – ICT As a Tool

25 06 2009 – Although ICT accounts for only around 2.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions, they have the potential to be used in reducing the other 97.5% in other sectors of the economy.

image ICTs could deliver approximately 7.8 GtCO2e of emissions savings in 2020, equivalent to 15% of all emissions. ICT-enabled energy efficiency alone translates into approximately $950 billion of cost savings.

Studies in various countries, generally supported by or associated with telecom companies, suggest broad potential for ICT to cut energy use and carbon emissions.

Video: Green Planet Episode 8: Green Best Practice

18 06 2009 – Are Green issues important to ICT companies just because they want to ‘feel good’, or does it mean ‘good business’ for them? Is there a real value to being Green, and how does this sit with their Corporate Social Responsibilities?

And are suppliers now being judged not only on their ability to deliver at a competitive price, but also on their Green credentials? As a response to these increasing green pressures, some telcos are now taking their internal sustainability practices and applying the principles to their entire supply chain.

Video: Green Planet Episode 7: Impact on the Consumer

11 06 2009 – Every action of a telecom operator or vendor, ultimately has an affect on the consumer. The industry’s move towards a greener, more sustainable future, is no different.

image Take end-user hardware as an example; although “in use” operational mode consumes the greatest amount of energy, when computers or mobile phones are left on standby and connected to a power supply they continue to “suck” energy. For mobile phones, it has been found that two thirds of the power consumed by a mobile device goes to waste when the battery is already fully charged but remains plugged to an outlet.

Through the creation of tools and applications, in addition to developments in technology, production processes and material use, vendors and operators are finding new ways to help consumers reduce their own personal carbon footprints.

Video: Green Planet Episode 6: E-Waste: Reduce, Re-Use, Recycle

05 06 2009 – The realization that the world’s resources are finite has led to a move towards sustainable manufacturing, and greater emphasis being placed on the reduction of waste.

imageGlobally, between 20 and 50 million tons of electronic waste are created each year. This "e-waste", whether mobile phones, laptops or electronic components, make up 5% of all municipal solid waste worldwide.

Video: Green Planet Episode 5: Sustainable Production for a Green Product Life-Cycle

28 05 2009 – So much attention today is paid to increasing energy efficiency as a way of going green, yet sustainable production is an equally important consideration for the ICT industry. Whilst many companies are increasing energy efficiencies, fewer focus on toxic waste, and even fewer get top marks for making absolute reductions in their own greenhouse gas emissions from the product manufacture and supply chain.

Many elements need to be considered early on in the production process, from the selection of raw materials to how design decisions may affect the green credentials of a product further on in it’s life-cycle. A "cradle-to-grave" approach, combined with recognition of international regulations help in reducing the ICT production footprint.

Video: Green Planet Episode 4: The Green Telecoms Network

21 05 2009 – Power consumption is a critical component of the network infrastructure of mobile operators. However, between 2 to 3 billion people – roughly one-third of the world’s population – are living in energy poverty, and more than 99 percent of people without electricity live in developing regions.

But saving energy is not the sole preserve of developing nations. In developed countries, the rising cost of energy, and the realisation of the environmental implications, means that operators are looking to save money wherever possible.

Video: Green Planet Episode 3: Innovation for Sustainable Efficiency

14 05 2009 – Where the planning of data centres is concerned sometimes a radical approach to the problem can be of enormous help in fostering and promoting greater efficiency. This sort of innovation, now being demonstrated in data centres across the globe, can also save money, energy and space whilst vastly reducing carbon footprints.

In Episode 3 of Green Planet, TelecomTV looks at examples of modularity and smart cooling, with case studies (from the Far East and the Farthest West) illustrating the value of innovative thinking on both sides of the world.

Video: Energy Efficiency & the Green Data Centre

telecomtv 07 05 2009 – Green Planet Episode 2: Energy Efficiency & the Green Data Centre. One of the most important issues faced by the world today is energy supply, and the fact that there may not be enough energy to support our future needs. In ICT, Data Centres are considered to be one of the industries biggest contributors to the energy crisis.

According to the Global e-Sustainability Initiative, data centres represent 18% of ICT greenhouse gas emissions. The top five search companies for example, collectively use about 2 million servers requiring about 5GW of power, equating to about 30% – 40% of their operating costs. By 2020, it is expected that there will be 122 million servers in use.
In Episode 2 of Green Planet, TelecomTV explores how energy shortage is driving new innovative approaches to data centre energy use, as efficient energy practices become essential to both the bottom line and the planet.

Video: Green Planet Episode 1: The Green Economy

130 04 2009 – Governments and companies around the world are urging us to think about the environment – and to act Green. Switch off the power. Use energy-saving low-voltage lights. Recycle waste. Buy local products. Reject over-packaging. Get a smaller, fuel-efficient car, Fly less and let the train take the strain….
